First Right to Choose

This postcard was sent by a male correspondent from Germany. He writes, "In Germany we have a relatively liberal and moderate regulation."

"In Germany, abortion is prohibited by §218 of the criminal code. However, it is possible to access abortion without prosecution under the following conditions:
  • If the abortion is performed within the first trimester (12 weeks) of the pregnancy and the pregnant individual has undergone a process of mandatory counseling beforehand. A three-day waiting period between the counseling and the intervention is also required.
  • If the pregnancy is the result of a sexual assault or if the physical and/or mental health of the pregnant individual is at risk.
Furthermore, §219a states, that institutions and individuals who are performing abortions, are prohibited from providing necessary information on abortion to anyone. It is possible for doctors to state that they do provide abortions, but not how and under which conditions."
