A postcard from
Iwate prefecture, in Japan's northeast, features an illustration of
Miyazawa Kenji's fantastic short story called
Yuki watari, about children who are invited to a meeting held by foxes (
kitsune) in the snow.
Kitsune wa konkon (a bit of
onomatopoeia for the sound foxes make) is one of the recurring lines in the story. Was it my imagination or did the foxes in the woods around my house in Iwate seem to 'bark'
konkon?
