phillies win the pennant!

Last night the Philadelphia Phillies beat the LA Dodgers 5-1 to win the 2008 National League Championship. The Phillies took the series 4-1. I made this card for Mrs. October, who is in her element.

learning to read

A postcrosser in Singapore said she likes photography that tells a story. This card, showing a freed slave learning to read, tells a powerful one. It's part of a set I picked up several years ago on a road trip in Alabama. I can't believe I'm parting with this card. It bears a quotation from Frederick Douglas: "Chains can put a man in slavery but only ignorance can keep him there."

beautiful stamps

Beautiful stamps have again come my way. Two from China, courtesy of friend Yue, sandwich a sleek one from France.

gingko nuts

Kyoto friend John sent this vibrant image of gingko nuts and leaves in autumn. He wrote that he'd just been picking the nuts. It was his first time and he was a bit surprised by just how stinky they were. He may be more surprised by how long it takes for the stink to go away. But the nuts are worth it!

fuwa

Friend Yue sent this line-up of Olympic mascots from China.

montbazin

Chloe, an eight-year-old postcrosser, sent this card from her hometown of Montbazin, France.

brett the babe

Brett Myers' unexpected three-hit/three-RBI performance on Friday prompted a lot of tongue-in-cheek headlines. Now an unfathomable 4 for 5 in postseason, Myers had four hits all season. All he shares with Babe Ruth is body type. I made this card for Mrs. October, a fan of offense, who must have enjoyed the game.

orange crush

Mrpotani got this postcard at a new museum on the Embarcadero dedicated to the San Francisco Muni Railways. It shows a 1938 St. Louis-built PCC streetcar, part of the fleet of vintage streetcars from around the US and the world which now run on the F-Market St. line. Mrpotani calls this car, her favorite, 'orange crush'. If you visit San Francisco, ride the cable car for sure but also take a ride on one of these great old streetcars!

jena markt

German postcrosser Sabrina sent this retro image of her hometown of Jena.
