A British postcrosser sent this card with the following message: "Like James Bond every Beefeater at the Tower of London has a license to kill. Fortunately, they never exercise this right."

baseball by bajus

These two baseball impressions by Slovak friend Jozef Bajus use the same intriguing techniques described below in Slices of time (9/11). The photos are of two Yale baseball teams. I doubt that the 93 on the jerseys in the top photo indicates the year, but these players could easily be from 1893. How very different from team photos of today. Thanks, Jozef, for these wonderful cards.

Two cards from Mrs. October in today's mail, one about baseball and one maybe not.

slices of time

Friend Jozef Bajus took time from working on pieces for an upcoming show to make some baseball postcards, utilizing old photos sent to him by a friend. The photos are supposed to be of an old Yale baseball team, but these guys here look to me more like they are on the rowing, basketball, or track teams. Jozef cut, colored, layered and otherwise manipulated the photo to create this striking image. More to follow.

Only 18 games left in the season. Here's another card for Mrs. October. Hamels and Myers up front, with Jamie Moyer, the steadiest of all, in the wings. If only they could pitch every game.

stay cool

This afternoon's mail brought another card from Mrs. October. I don't know if she's referring to this hot and humid end to summer or to our baseball team.

Another treat from the Wischmann's series, this of the six-motor Do-X. Made in Germany, it was the largest seaplane to make a transatlantic flight. Such a 'modern' image.

rudolf koivu

Postcrosser Hilja sent this romantic image from Finland. "This," she writes, "is the most beautiful picture painting by Mr. Rudolf Koivu, who was a Finnish illustrator." Koivu lived from 1890 to 1946.

Also love this stamp from Finland, on the card above. Few things say Europe like a tram. Trams, streetcars, trolleys--more, more, more. When will the US get serious about public transportation?

IndigoAngel continued the nature theme with the stamps on her card, shown below. The koalas in the eucalyptus tree are too cute!

IndigoAngel, a postcrosser from 'down under', sent this card which shows off the great natural beauty of Blue Mountains National Park. The park is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

A Spanish postcrosser named Tere sent this scenic view from the Palencia region, showing the Carrion River and Our Lady of Belen.

This card is from an old series put out by Japan Post to commemorate Basho's Narrow Road to the Deep North. A favorite, it was the first book I read in Japanese. I've done a freestyle translation of the haiku on the card:
Mogami River--
taking May's rains
and rushing away.

crossing the channel

Another card from the retro aeroplane series. When Bleriot crossed the channel, in a plane he built himself, it was the longest air flight to date.

clam-gatherers

A friend in Arkansas sent this card of a Hokusai print called Clam-gatherers on the shore. Tropical storm Hanna will bring similar skies here tomorrow.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs' first season is now dust. I used elements from a magnetic schedule and added 'commentary' to make this postcard.

now playing

This morning I happened on an old postcard I bought about 10 years ago in a family-run 5 & 10 store in Quakertown, a small town I go through on trips to Philadelphia. The store is, I hear, now gone. I still dig the card.
