first new year's card

My mother turned to postcards this year for both Christmas and New Year's. This one looks like Christmas but is for New Year's.

HI. This nineteenth-century imagery of using holly etc that we associate with Christmas for New Years reflects how in the 19th century people really did celebrate the 12 days of Christmas -- beginning with Christmas Day. I read a lot of 19th century newspapers when doing my dissertation, and it was interesting that ads for "gifts of the season" were just as frequent between Christmas and New Years as before Christmas -- no after Christmas sales then!
